The Hürtgenwald in Change: My Photographic Reflection on Climate Change

The black-and-white photographs I captured in the Hürtgenwald on Tri-X analog film are my personal documentation of the striking impact of climate change on this region. The persistent droughts of recent years are highly unusual for this area and pose a serious threat to the fragile forest ecosystem I’ve come to know so well.

I’ve observed how climate change has brought increasingly frequent and intense droughts, weakening the trees and making them vulnerable to pests like the bark beetle. With each dry season, the risk of wildfires rises, adding yet another layer of stress to an already fragile landscape.

These changes in the Hürtgenwald are not isolated—they are part of a global phenomenon. Rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events are not abstract statistics; they are visible here, in the soil, in the trees, and in the light that falls differently on this changing forest.

Through my photographs, I’ve tried to capture not only the visible changes in the landscape but also the emotional weight of witnessing this transformation. Each frame is more than just an image—it’s a reflection of loss, resilience, and the urgency to act.

Standing in the forest with my Leica M-series camera, listening to the silence interrupted only by the wind, I felt the weight of what we are risking. My images are not just about the changes I see—they are about the responsibility we share.

This project is my small contribution to raising awareness about how deeply the climate crisis affects even these seemingly timeless woods. Through analog photography, I aim to preserve not only the physical beauty of this place but also a sense of its fragility and impermanence.

For those seeking more information on the broader impacts of climate change, I recommend exploring resources like the German Federal Environment Agency (umweltbundesamt.de).

This is more than just a photographic project for me—it’s a call to observe, reflect, and act.
